America has only just begun exploring the effects of CBD oil on Crohn’s disease. While more research is necessary this early in the game, the outlook is promising. Clinical trials and formal studies have given Crohn’s sufferers something to consider in their arsenal to keep Crohn’s disease in remission.
What is Crohn’s disease?
Crohn’s disease is an incurable auto-immune inflammatory bowel disease. Left untreated, it can wreak havoc on the digestive tract, causing damage anywhere from the mouth to the anus as well as other parts of the body. Symptoms include chronic inflammation, abdominal pain and swelling, intense diarrhea followed by bouts of constipation, and the passing of blood in the stool, which can lead to anemia.
Other systemic issues related to the condition include joint pain, chronic fatigue, other autoimmune disorders, inconsistent menstruation, and a lack of nutrient absorption resulting in a weakening of the body, including teeth and bones. The pain and bloating associated with the condition often suppresses the appetite, leaving the body undernourished and often dangerously underweight.
Treatment includes medication, surgery, and lifestyle and diet changes. Surgery is usually only a temporary solution, since the disease often returns in another portion of the intestines, requiring a repeat surgery down the road. About 60 percent of surgery patients need future surgeries.
Most of the medication options suppress the immune system, opening the path for secondary issues. Others are so expensive that they are not an option for some patients. Lifestyle and diet changes, while improving overall health, don’t benefit all patients fast enough, and some people are too overwhelmed or weak to make drastic changes, especially when this path is not commonly supported by the mainstream medical community.
How can CBD oil help?
Clinical trials and controlled studies with cannabis have shown several positive benefits. First of all, pain reduction was a huge benefit. The reduction or elimination of pain allows the Crohn’s sufferer to pursue a more normal lifestyle.
Another benefit is the increase in appetite. Whether this is from the reduction of other symptoms or a result of the CBD itself is unknown. Either way, ingesting and absorbing enough nutrients is difficult for Crohn’s patients, so increasing appetite will enable the patient to get more nourishment and improve overall health.
A third benefit is the reduction of inflammation. Both intestinal and systemic inflammation are banes of the disease. CBD works to return the body to a state of homeostasis, or internal stability, which inflammation is not a part of.
Some clinical studies show that CBD oil reduces not only the symptoms of the disease, but also the frequency of flares as well. Each flare may do permanent damage and leave scar tissue in the wake, besides disabling the sufferer temporarily, thickening the intestinal wall, and impairing digestion. For these reasons, avoiding flares is a high priority in the life of Crohn’s disease patients.
CBD also helps with mood and anxieties
CBD also has a positive effect on mood and also helps people with anxieties. Because many people who suffer from incurable diseases understandably fall into depression, retreating from life, exercise, and socialization, they grow more unhealthy on a physical and mental level. Maintaining a positive attitude and purpose are important–CBD helps fight against this depression.
CBD offers these health improvements because it is a cannabinoid. When introduced into the human body, CBD triggers an increase in the number of a naturally occurring bodily substance, endocannabinoids. These bind with cannabinoid receptors in the immune system, brain, and numerous other parts of the body as part of the endocannabinoid system.
CBD is very promising
The entire endocannabinoid system works to reverse cellular damage in the body. Essentially, it is a stabilizer, enabling the body to function on a stable level regardless of external stressors.
While this therapy has been used from ancient times as a medicinal herb, more research is needed to find out the best way to prescribe CBD oil for Crohn’s patients and how to maximize benefits while minimizing risks. Meanwhile, CBD is looking promising for many Crohn’s patients. Hope is always good news.
