Cannabidiol (CBD) is available in the form of supplements, topicals, liquids, and oils, and scientists have shown interest in it for the treatment of pain. Fortunately, their research with this derivative of the Cannabis plant has yielded promising results.
Animal Research with CBD
The scientific research with animals has shown beneficial results with the use of CBD oil for pain relief. A 2007 study in the European Journal of Pharmacology found that oral CBD effectively reduced pain sensitivity among rats with inflammation and nerve pain. A study involving female mice with breast cancer, published in a 2014 edition of the British Journal of Pharmacology, found that CBD reduced pain sensitivity associated with chemotherapy. Additionally, a study in a 2012 publication of the European Journal of Pain found that cannabinoids treated muscular pain in rats. This study also concluded that locally-administered cannabinoids were effective in treating muscular pain, suggesting that CBD oil could be applied locally to reduce pain in specific muscles.
Human Studies with CBD
The animal research with CBD has had auspicious results, and human studies have also shown benefits associated with CBD. In a 2018 study in the scientific journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, men who received CBD treatment experienced significant decreases in knee pain. A report published in a 2015 edition of the Journal of Oral & Facial Pain and Headache reviewed the results of 13 studies and concluded that cannabinoids could be effective in the treatment of nerve pain that does not respond to other treatments. Another review, published the same year in the Journal of Neuroimmune Pharmacology assessed the results of eleven high-quality studies and found that seven of them showed that cannabinoids significantly improved chronic pain.
Studies with both humans and animals suggest that cannabidiol and cannabinoids in general can provide pain relief. It appears that CBD can provide relief for individuals experiencing difficult-to-treat chronic pain, and it can serve as a remedy for pain associated with cancer treatment. It could also be useful in the treatment of nerve pain, and its effectiveness for treating muscular pain could make it beneficial for athletes. The entire body of research supports the use of CBD oil for pain management and relief, and it is a sensible option for those who want to treat their pain without addictive prescription opiate medications.
