The Case for CBD and Medicinal Cannabis… Can it Help?

Many studies have shown that cannabis has medical benefits for pain, glaucoma, anxiety, seizures and a panoply of ailments. The downside is that many patients don’t have any desire to experience the “high” associated with pot. That’s where cannabidiol–CBD for short–comes in. CBD provides the relief without the side effects.

Where Does CBD Come From?

CBD can be made from hemp or marijuana but the plants themselves are quite different from one another. The flowers of marijuana contain a high amount of THC, the psychotropic element used for a high. The hemp plant is bred to have negligible amounts of THC and its original use was to create clothing, rope and cloth. CBD made from hemp is naturally less powerful but even CBD derived from the cannabis plant is still generally low enough in THC to provide a sense of calmness and relaxation without the more intense high associated with smoking marijuana. CBD from hemp is the safest and most common compound used for therapeutic purposes, particularly for children.

CBD Extraction Methods

CO2, ethanol or olive oil are the most common extraction carriers used for retrieving cannabidiol from either hemp or marijuana. Many people make CBD oil at home, much as one time it was popular to make pot butter for use in cookies and brownies. Some ill-informed people use naphtha as an agent, but it can be extremely dangerous. Butane presents similar health hazards.

Safe Usage of Hemp CBD

Obtained from a reliable source, CBD hemp extracts are safe to use even with children. Not all CBD products are created equal, so make sure you know what you’re getting. Oils often carry with them other elements that can build up in the system with regular use. This is particularly important to consider when using CBD with children. There are organic hemp CBD extracts that are not only legal but are also soluble in water, making it easy for the body to absorb what it needs while the rest is naturally eliminated.

Is It Legal?

CBD is legal in the United States for medical use. Weirdly, although you can buy hemp rope or a hemp tee shirt, it’s illegal to grow the leafy plant in the United States, probably because it is often mistaken for marijuana.

Side Effects

Although CBD binds to a different receptor than THC, both substances can often cause a dry mouth sensation. High doses of cannabidiol also temporarily halt the activity of P450 enzymes, altering the way certain other drugs react in the body. It’s not dissimilar to the effect that grapefruit has on some drugs. Certain drugs that are metabolized by cytochrome P450 may include steroids, antihistamines, antibiotics and NSAIDS. It’s important to check with your doctor if you take any prescription meds or even OTC drugs.

When properly used, CBD has proven to be a reliable health aid and does not provide a psychotropic high and thus can be safe to use for children and the elderly. It is important not to confuse medical or legal marijuana with CBD. States that do not permit marijuana in any form do allow the use of CBD for medicinal purposes. Whether topical or ingestible, if not been prescribed by a doctor, be sure to purchase your CBD from a reputable source rather than seeking a “good deal” online.
