Parkinson’s disease is a debilitating degenerative disease with no known cure. However, there are treatments that can slow Parkinson’s disease’s development and alleviate its symptoms. There are several important ways in which the use of cannabinoids (CBD) can help treat some of the worst symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease.
CBD and Brain Inflammation
Studies of patients who have suffered from advanced Parkinson’s disease have found that their brains contained increased levels of a type of protein known as cytokines. CBD has been shown to reduce the inflammatory effect that cytokines have in the human brain, which suggests CBD can play a role in slowing down the effect that these damaging inflammatory proteins can have as Parkinson’s disease develops.
Studies have also associated CBD with promoting another kind of cytokine which has anti-inflammatory properties. This means that CBD not only suppress the type of cytokine which is associated with worsening the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, but it also promotes the activity of cytokines which may reduce these symptoms. CBD therefore provides double protection against the damaging role cytokines play in promoting the brain inflammation associated with the development of Parkinson’s disease.
CBD and Antioxidants
Secondly, CBD has been shown to affect the activity of antioxidants in the human body. Oxidization in the human body is dangerous because it can damage cells and other things which the human body needs to function correctly. Antioxidants are substances which help prevent the damaging process of oxidization. Some of the most common sources of antioxidants are vitamins C and E, which are found in many fruits and vegetables.
Antioxidant activity in the human body is regulated by a protein known as NRF2. Activation of NRF2 is associated with suppressing the body’s ability to use antioxidants effectively, which in turn increases the speed at which damaging conditions such as Parkinson’s disease develop. Various studies have shown that CBD is effective in fighting against the activation of NRF2, thus improving the body’s ability to use antioxidants effectively. CBD’s effect on NRF2 therefore can help slow the progress of Parkinson’s disease.
CBD and Anxiety
The development of Parkinson’s disease is accompanied in many patients by anxiety and depression. CBD’s positive effect on mental health problems such as anxiety and depression are among its most widely studied effects. Anxiety and depression are associated with activity in the amygdala, which is the area of the brain responsible for what is popularly known as the fight or flight reflex. When the amygdala becomes overstimulated, it produces the same feelings of anxiety that people feel when faced with dangerous situations. By affecting the amygdala’s ability to induce these negative feelings, CBD can play an important role in reducing some of the worst mental symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease’s advancement.
It is important to reiterate that CBD does not provide a cure for Parkinson’s disease, but can affect the worst of its symptoms. CBD’s effectiveness in combating brain inflammation, promoting antioxidant activity and reducing feelings of anxiety and depression therefore make it an important tool in alleviating some of the most common symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease.
