Health Benefits and Effects of Cannabidiol (CBD)

Since California first legalized medical marijuana in 1996, the use of the cannabis plant for medical treatment has been legalized in 29 states. As the use of medical marijuana becomes increasingly normalized and accessible, it is important for consumers to become familiar with the industry and the options available. One treatment option that is often forgotten is the use of Cannabidiol (CBD) extracted from the hemp plant instead of marijuana. The compounds extracted from both hemp and marijuana plants are molecularly identical and offer the same benefits, but CBD from Hemp oil is already legalized across the country. It also offers a treatment opportunity to those who do not have access to legalized medicinal marijuana.

Natural CBD

CBD is a natural compound found in the hemp plant. Unlike the most common compound (THC), CBD is completely nonpsychoactive. This means that it will not cause a “high” like the one resulting from THC, making it a safe and non-addictive option for any consumer. While THC has been cited as the source of the positive outcomes related to using medical marijuana, scientists have found that CBD can similarly combat ailments now treated with THC.

Additionally, CBD has been studied as an alternative treatment option for common diseases and disorders that have standard pharmaceutical treatment paths. The pharmaceutical industry has never been stronger and has established a monopoly on the treatment of a variety of medical issues, including psychoactive disorders and Parkinson’s. However, after years of research, the use of CBD treatment methods are expanding, offering an alternative to those forgotten by the health industry.

Anti-Psychotic

CBD has been proven to be effective as a natural antipsychotic. Studies have proven that CBD helps manage the symptoms of many psychological disorders, including anxiety, major depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, and post traumatic stress disorder. CBD chemically affects the brain similarly to the mainstream SSRI (Zoloft, Prozac, Xanax, etc.) pharmaceutical drugs used to treat these psychoactive disorders. Like SSRI medication, CBD helps increase the levels of serotonin in the brain, creating relief from many anxiety-based symptoms. While many patients respond well to formal treatment, common antipsychotic medications can have extreme and potentially deadly side effects. These medications can also be physically addictive or sedative, greatly impacting everyday life. Having the option to choose a natural alternative to traditional treatment options benefit those who have been subject to the negative outcomes surrounding Big-Pharma medications. CBD has been proven to have negligible side effects for users. Because it does not contain the THC compound, it is also non-habit forming. Overall, CBD is a less expensive, more natural way to tackle these chronic disorders.

Parkinson’s Disease

Scientists have also studied CBD’s positive effects in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. A study conducted on mice in 2015 showed that Cannabidiol effectively protected the neurons that are degenerating during the progression of the disease. Those treating their Parkinson’s with CBD treatment have reported things like a decrease in tremors, improvement in digestion, and a regulated sleep cycle. Most importantly, CBD has the ability to act as an antioxidant, allowing it to protect the body from the harmful chemicals and side effects associated with traditional medications. In combination with the positive antipsychotic effects associated with CBD, this alternative or additional treatment is groundbreaking for those suffering from this debilitating disease.

A New Frontier

Cannabidiol’s impact on psychoactive disorders and Parkinson’s disease is a small sample of the positive impact the CBD compound has had in a wide-range of diseases and disorders. CBD is quickly becoming a viable option for mainstream treatment of chronic disorders because of its a non-addictive, natural quality. While CBD for the marijuana plant is still illegal in many areas of the country, the compound extracted from the Hemp plant is already widely available. This natural alternative will continue to help release our nation’s chemical dependency, and help diversify the types of care available.
