Can CBD From Cannabis Treat Chronic Anxiety?

(Updated 04/02/17)

Medical marijuana may be fairly new to us, but it’s actually an old remedy. Hundreds of years ago in India, for instance, it was used to treat various psychological disorders. Cannabis was also used in the West to treat different illnesses throughout the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries until the substance was banned… namely for political reasons. After all this time it is still met with resistance by doctors, politicians, and lobbyists, but evidence is slowly mounting about medical marijuana’s ability to help relieve issues like anxiety.

It’s important to understand that using CBD (Cannabidiol) from cannabis to treat anxiety is a delicate process. You can’t simply light up a joint and expect your symptoms to disappear; however, understanding how to properly use medicinal marijuana and medicinal hemp could potentially reduce your anxiety and save you from using expensive, unpleasant prescription drugs.

Most marijuana strains include two types of chemicals: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), although some may exclusively contain one or the other. It’s critical to know the difference because choosing the wrong variety can make your anxiety much worse.

THC is the psychoactive chemical that receives the most attention in popular culture. Users under the influence tend to feel intoxicated and euphoric (“high”). Unfortunately, THC is detrimental to those with anxiety.

The biggest problem with THC is that it can cause severe panic and paranoia. Because medical marijuana is regulated and expertly grown, its containers are labeled with percentages that indicate how much THC they contain, if any. When treating anxiety, stay away from these types of strains. There are plenty of THC-free ones available.

CBD, on the other hand, has little to no psychoactive effect. Instead, it creates what’s colloquially referred to as a “body high.” Aside from being a great way to relieve pain, it also triggers a pleasant sense of relaxation without clouding your mind. Consequently, you don’t have to worry about becoming depressed or scared.

CBD from hemp legal in all US states

Because CBD derived from hemp does not contain illegal amounts of THC it is legal in all 50 states. In fact, you can have legal CBD products extracted from hemp delivered right to your door.

Like any medication, efficacy depends heavily on dosage. If you use too little, the CBD in cannabis won’t be sufficient. Exceeding the dose could make you film Trolls 2016 now

The only way to find your key amount is to experiment. Much like alcohol tolerance, everyone has a different threshold. Start by trying a small amount and see how you feel. Give it some time, as many strains don’t take effect until several minutes after the CBD hits your bloodstream. If you find that nothing’s improved, take a little more. Increase it incrementally until the proper balance is reached. Remember, you can always increase your CBD, but you can’t instantly expel it from your body if you exceed the ideal dose.

Another thing to consider is how you’d like to use the marijuana. Although smoking is the most commonly known delivery method, it can still prove harmful to your lungs. Some individuals also find it unpleasant, as marijuana smoke is an irritant that induces strong coughing.

Fortunately, it’s possible to ingest cannabis in a variety of smoke-free ways. Cannabis oil, for instance, comes in caplets that you swallow like any regular pill. Studies have proven its efficacy in reducing anxiety. Similarly, users can create their own cannabis oil or extracts to mix with teas or baked goods, such as brownies, cookies or muffins. Keep in mind that the CBD has to go through your digestive system before it’s absorbed into your bloodstream. As a result, it can take upwards of 45 minutes before you feel its effects.

Although still controversial, there’s increasing evidence showing medical cannabis as a safe alternative to conventional prescription drugs. Considering the costs and side effects associated with anti-anxiety medications, it can’t hurt to research alternative therapies like this one.
