Both adults and children can suffer from the effects of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). These conditions cause individuals who are afflicted by them to be unable to focus and greatly reduces their knowledge retention ability. Traditional treatment for both ADD and ADHD has used stimulant medications based on methamphetamines such as Adderall and Ritalin, but with the rising tide of research into treatments produced from the hemp plant, more and more patients are seeking natural alternative treatments such as hemp-extracted CBD for these conditions.
What are ADD and ADHD?
Before we get into treatments, we need to understand the conditions we are treating and how they affect the cognitive function of people who deal with them. In simple terms, both ADD and ADHD are conditions that create a need for an individual to self-stimulate their brain. For most of us, our brain functions naturally with normal everyday stimulation and we are able to perform common tasks like reading, studying, or watching television with no trouble. For those who suffer from attention disorders, the brain needs more stimulation than what their surroundings provide. This causes symptoms such as fidgeting, excessive talking, and the inability to stay focused on any tasks that don’t provide sufficient stimuli. Playing video games, for example, is generally not a problem for someone who has ADD or ADHD because video games submerge their brain in an overabundance of stimuli; visual, aural, and tactile. Reading a book, however, can be a severe challenge due to the sedentary nature of the task. This is because reading a book does not provide enough stimulus to actively engage the person’s brain and they must find stimulation elsewhere by fidgeting, talking, or even just daydreaming. Imagine you are a computer with one browser tab open. That’s how a normal brain operates, one tab at a time. Now imagine that you are that same computer, but now you have 10 browser tabs open and are constantly flipping from one to the other. That is how the brain of someone suffering from ADD or ADHD works because it needs that constant stimulus in order to function.
Prescription Treatments for ADD and ADHD.
The most common way to treat these conditions is by using medications that fall under the stimulant class. Medicines such as Ritalin and Adderall bypass the need for self-stimulation by activating endorphins in the brain, which has the counterintuitive effect of calming the patient down and allowing them to focus. Unfortunately, these prescribed medications also come with a host of side effects. Stimulants can cause loss of appetite, short temper, anger management issues, weight loss, and sleeplessness. These side effects are so common that it is normal that people who are prescribed these medications be warned that they will happen rather than that they might happen. Many patients (and parents of underaged patients) will stop medicating for their condition even when the medications help due to the wired, jittery feeling that they induce.
What is CBD and Why is it a Better Treatment?
CBD is the scientific shorthand designation for cannabidiol, a substance that can be extracted from either the hemp plant or its relative the marijuana plant. Typically taken in the form of a natural oil that is infused with the substance, it is not a stimulant and carries none of the side effects that are associated with the medications that are commonly prescribed for ADD and ADHD. Cannabidiol treats these conditions similarly to prescribed stimulant medications by increasing the dopamine levels in the brain. The benefit of treating ADD and ADHD with CBD, however, lies in the fact that CBD is not a stimulant. Patients can get the same cognitive result from using cannabidiol that they get from using Ritalin and other medications, only without the negative effects that are common with stimulant therapy. The side effects that CBD can cause are reportedly mild cases of dry mouth, dizziness, and low blood pressure.
Hemp-extracted CBD tends to be a more natural product than marijuana-extracted CBD due to the process by which they are extracted. Cannabidiol is typically extracted from marijuana using propane, butane, or ethanol, all of which are neurotoxins. On the other hand, extracting CBD from hemp is usually done using either steam or carbon dioxide. This extraction method removes the risk of chemical residue in hemp-extracted cannabidiol.
CBD offers a method of treatment for both ADD and ADHD that is effective and apparently far safer than the standard practice of prescribing stimulants to treat the conditions. While CBD can be extracted from either hemp or marijuana, cannabidiol that is extracted from hemp contains negligible amounts of THC and does not cause the euphoric “high” feeling that is associated with marijuana. CBD oils also will not be flagged in a drug screen, unless you are taking unnecessarily high dosages of CBD. When it does flag on a drug screen, it generally flags as a false positive due to the lack of any other THC-related compounds in the system.
Overall, CBD extracted from hemp is a healthier and more natural way to treat a condition that affects millions of people all over the world. By using hemp-extracted CBD to treat ADD and ADHD, the risk of adverse effects from stimulants can be avoided while still allowing people with these conditions to have the cognitive ability to focus, learn, and work the way that people with “normal” brains do.
