6 natural ways to help reduce anxiety and improve your outlook!

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental health problems plaguing the average American. Anxiety can take many forms, some worse than others, but they are all a detriment to your quality of life and even those around you.

Medications are the most common modalities used to relieve anxiety, but if you want a more natural approach, then the techniques in this article might be just what you need! These techniques provide a great alternative or supplement to a medication regimen.

  1. Laughter!

Indulge your sense of humor and laugh more! laughing increases dopamine and reduces stress causing hormones like cortisol. Watch a funny tv show or even download a laugh track app on your phone, just anticipating the sound of laughter can have this effect on a smaller scale.

  1. Relaxation time

Schedule some relaxation time, you deserve it after all! If you can find a half hour every day to do something you find relaxing and lower your heart rate, it can work wonders on managing your anxiety.

  1. GABA

GABA is a supplement that is designed to help calm overly anxious people. GABA is short for gamma-aminobutyric acid. It is a brain transmitter that counteracts glutamate, a chemical that increases excitability.

  1. Lavender

Lavender produces a smell that is very relaxing to most people and has been shown to reduce anxiety. Try rubbing a drop of lavender essential oil on your upper chest and let yourself inhale the odor.

  1. Ground yourself

By grounding yourself, I basically mean do something that solidifies your attachment to the present moment. Try taking your house keys and running your fingers along the edge, hold an ice cube in your hand for as long as you can, pick up something that is somewhat heavy. These activities cause you to focus on them and leave whatever you may be anxious about in the periphery of your mind.
